Ash, who completed his kayak journey from the UK to Spain on 5th August, undertook the journey as a solo project to raise fund for Help For Heroes. AST Systems provided Ash with satellite communications equipment including a Globalstar SPOT Personal GPS tracker
, Thuraya satellite phone, Thrane & Thrane BGAN EXPLORER 500
and a Toshiba NB200 laptop.
Ash commented on his blog site, www.seakayakchallenge.com
, ‘AST Systems’ advice is well proven with experience in satellite communications covering the land, and maritime spectrum over the past couple of decades. Without the equipment supplied by AST Systems I would have lacked all reasonable connectivity with sponsors, followers and critical safety means.”
Ash has been using the Globalstar SPOT Personal GPS Tracker to post live location information on his blog site, via Google Maps. “The SPOT Personal Tracker is an extremely useful piece of equipment both from a PR and safety front. It allows the shore-based nominated safety contacts to keep an eye on my whereabouts, simply by the pressing a button. The SPOT also has a help function, which allows, if required to request rescue in the event of a life threatening situation.”
“The Thuraya satellite phone allowed for instant communications with anyone, wherever I was; in the middle of the English Channel, or on an exposed rock out of GSM range. It helped me to stay in contact with Friends and Family back home.”
“The BGAN EXPLORER 500 satellite terminal which has provided broadband internet at 464kbps wherever I am, was used to keep in touch with the blog, answer emails whilst I was sat on the beach at the end of a day, or taking shelter from a storm. This level of connectivity on a solo voyage is rare, it has definitely helped in raising extra funds for Help for Heroes’” commented Ash.
