Inmarsat Satellite Repositioning Information for BGAN Users

Inmarsat Satellite Repositioning

General Information

Following the successful launch of the 3rd Inmarsat-4 (I-4) satellite, Inmarsat have now published further information about the planned repositioning of its constellation to accommodate the new satellite.  The repositioning process will begin in January 2009 and is due to complete by late February 2009.

Following the repositioning, the 3 satellites will be referred to as:

  • I-4 Americas
  • I-4 EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa)
  • I-4 Asia Pacific

Service Outages

There is expected to be two short service outage during the repositioning process.  This will affect a small number of BGAN and FleetBroadband users in specific locations for a short period only.

First Service Outage

BGAN and FleetBroadband service will not be available in the area highlighted in red for 25 days, from 7th January to 2nd February 2009 for the first phase of repositioning.  The repositioning process does not affect services on the I-3 satellites.

Second Service Outage

BGAN and FleetBroadband service will not be available in the area highlighted in red, during the second phase repositioning process for 19 days from 9th to 28th February 2009.  The repositioning process does not affect services on the I-3 satellites.

LaunchPad

There will be a new version of BGAN LaunchPad for BGAN and FleetBroadband terminals to represent the change in coverage.  This will be made available shortly and can be downloaded from the Inmarsat website ( www.inmarsat.com/support )

The new version will also help to guide users through the process of satellite repositioning by depicting the change in coverage as it occurs.  Users will be able to click on the series of tabs at the top of the coverage map, which will indicate the coverage available after a given date.

Once the repositioning process is complete, users will be able to download a small patch to LaunchPad, this will update the map to illustrate the coverage at the end of the repositioning process and remove the tabs.

Benefits

BGAN users will benefit from both increased coverage and optimised service performance when Inmarsat has completed the process of repositioning its I-4 satellites. The specific benefits to users in each region are outlined below.

Americas, network coverage will be extended in North America to include parts of Western Canada and Alaska

EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), the satellite will be directly over the region meaning it will be easier to point the BGAN terminal to the satellite, optimising data rates

Asia-Pacific, network coverage will be extended to the whole of the Asia-Pacific region, with complete coverage of China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand
